born in Martinsburg, West Virginia was a newspaper publisher and political leader of the Democratic Party in Virginia for four decades. Byrd served as Virginia's governor from 1926-1930 and represented Virginia as a United States Senator from 1933 until 1965. He was the leader of the "conservative coalition" in the United States Senate. He died at his home in Berryville, Virginia at the age of 79.
