Born in Norwich, Norfolk, England on Dec. 4, 1833. His family emigrated to the United States in 1835 and the family settled in Albany, New York where he started his career as an artist. He was influenced by the Hudson River School and although he later moved back to England, he continued to paint many American scenes. He was also the illustrator for Nathaniel Hawthorne's Scarlet Letter and for Longfellow's poems. He died on Jan. 19, 1905. ALS on 3.5 x 4.5 stationery in very good condition.
