The third vice president of the United States who fatally shot his rival, Alexander Hamilton in a duel. Burr was born on February 6, 1756 in Newark, New Jersey and died on September 14, 1836 at Port Richmond, Staten Island, New York.
One page, 6.25" x 7.75", with integral address sheet, no place identified, dated March 17 (1822 written in pencil) Docketed on integral leaf on verso by unidentified hand. A letter to Martha Bradstreet concerning property in upstate New York for which she was claiming title. Signed with initials "AB". Besides usual mail folds, the letter is in fine condition.
Martha Bradstreet (born 1780) was the step granddaughter of British General John Bradstreet (1714-1774). In the 1820's she retained the legal services of Burr in an attempt to recover properties in upstate New York granted to General Bradstreet by the British government for his service in in the French and Indian War and subsequently confiscated during the American Revolutionary War. She eventually lost her fight for the property in the United States Supreme Court.
