William Tecumseh Sherman was born in Lancaster, Ohio in 1820. He is probably best known for his 1864 "March to the Sea" as a general in the Union Army during which he deployed his "hard war" military strategy.  Prior to the Civil War he practiced law in Kansas and served as superintendent of the Louisiana State Seminary of Learning and Military Academy which later became Louisiana State University. After Louisiana seceded from the union he moved to St. Louis and later volunteered for the Union Army. He died in 1891.
