1852 New Orleans - Elizabethan Album belonging to Mary Jane Clohecy

Hardbound. Full leather with gilt ornamentation on covers and fore-edges. The leather is worn at edges and has a 2" strip missing from bottom spine (see photo). The book was given to Mary Jane Clohecy on Dec. 24, 1852 by her friend O. Williamson. Miss Clohecy was 17 years old at that time, she was born in Brooklyn, New York and married Enoch Joseph Springbett in 1857,  they had 4 children, however two of the children died in early childhood. Her husband died in 1871 and Mary Jane remained unmarried the rest of her life. She lived most of her life in on Baronne Street but was living with her son Robert at the time of her death in July, 1909.

The album contains a full page portrait of Queen Elizabeth and also portraits of of Anne Bolyn, Catherine of Arragon and Jane Seymour plus a few more female members of English royalty during the Elizabethan period. It also contains an original drawing and about 20 pages of poetic advice and wisdom given to Mary by her friends dating from 1852-1854. The book is in Good condition for its age with a couple closed tears, pencil scribbling on the the presentation page (front endpaper) and medium to heavy foxing on some of the portraits and light foxing on a few other pages.
