Union commander of New Orleans after its capture during the Civil War. While he was governor of the city he was responsible for many laws that the citizens of the city considered insulting and abusive, earning Butler the nickname "Beast Butler". In 1882 he was elected governor of Massachusetts and in 1884 he was an unsuccessful presidential candidate.
