He was born in Guthrie, Kentucky in 1905 and died in Connecticut in 1989. He was an author, poet, critic and teacher. He taught at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee and later at Louisiana State University where he was one of the founders of the literary quarterly, The Southern Review. He was the only person to receive the Pulitzer Prize for poetry and fiction (All The King's Men).
