- Born in New Orleans in 1929 and lived most of her childhood around Selma and Montgomery, Alabama. She graduated from Newcomb College in New Orleans in 1950. Most of her writings are set in the past in Louisiana or Alabama. She was awarded the Pulitzer for Fiction in 1964 for her saga The Keepers of the House.
